perimenopause The time in a woman’s life when her estrogen levels start to drop and her menstrual periods are irregular, usually 3–5 years before menopause. Symptoms often include hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness and infertility. Perimenopausal means referring to or having to do with perimenopause.
